Little Santo Domingo:

The Dominican Heart of Miami

Allapattah, Miami’s historic, diverse neighborhood, was shaped by immigrants. After the 1980 unrest and commercial collapse along NW 17th Avenue, Dominican immigrants rebuilt Allapattah’s abandoned storefronts without formal credit, insurance, or subsidies. Through barbershops, salons, markets, travel agencies, and restaurants, they created a self-sustaining micro-economy rooted in mutual aid, stabilizing a disinvested corridor and transforming it into Little Santo Domingo—Miami’s Dominican cultural and commercial heart.

Officially designated in 2003, the corridor became a center of language, multicultural identity, and entrepreneurship. As redevelopment pressures intensified after 2013, rising rents threatened displacement. In 2023, the National Trust named it one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. Main Street activations and cultural events throughout the year affirm its resilience and cultural vitality.

As we work to ensure development and heritage coexist, a vision anchored in the historic Little Santo Domingo corridor. Allapattah’s future depends on the strength of its roots and the security of its residents. By prioritizing community ownership, we ensure that neighborhood revitalization never leads to displacement.

The designation of Little Santo Domingo as one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places has been a catalyst for our community, fostering a deep sense of pride, identity, and an enhanced quality of life. Our future vision includes the installation of historic signage, vibrant murals, and public art, including sculptures celebrating Dominican culture, alongside curated walking tours of the corridor. In solidarity with our sister communities in Lawrence, the Bronx, Washington Heights, Providence, Paterson, and Madrid, we are working to secure local, state, and national historic designations to ensure our cultural enclave remains a protected part of the American landscape.
